Cherokee is located on the Little Sioux River at the junction of Hwy 59 and State Hwy 3. The river is a beautiful asset to the town, it provides the opportunity for fishing, canoeing and beautiful park areas.

The town of Aurelia was named after a daughter of one of the railroad builders. His name was John I Blair. Aurelia shares a school district with Alta, it's neighbor to the east the Alta-Aurelia Community Schools.
